How Long Denture Repair May Take

Denture Repair Maricopa, AZ

Many patients with dentures will need denture repair, possibly several times throughout their lifetime. A person could need dentures for several reasons. You could have a full set of dentures or a partial set, and either one may require repair. Dentures are necessary and a very economical option for missing one or multiple teeth. They are very easy to clean, adaptable, and help restore your smile and confidence very easily.

Dentures are easy to clean, and patients are always very happy once they receive them. They can typically last from 2 to 15 or more years, depending on how they are cared for and what they are made of.

Why would my dentures need repairing?

There are many reasons a patient may require denture repair. They have been cracked or completely broken in half, which would need immediate repair, or they may feel uncomfortable in your mouth. Flexible material on the dentures can sometimes loosen and cause your dentures to shift inside your mouth. This type of repair is considered a relining, and the other where a crack or complete break is involved is called rebasing. Your dentist will need to take a new impression of your mouth for a relining. They will file down your dentures and secure them to the new impression, and once it is dry, you can be on your way.

A rebasing can sometimes take a little longer. This process is much more extensive. The entire base needs replaced if the teeth are still in good shape, but the base is cracked or broken. A rebasing could take a few weeks, depending on where it is done. Your dentist will give you a temporary pair of dentures if this happens.

Can you fix dentures yourself?

Although you can purchase at-home denture repair kits, it is not recommended. If dentures don’t fit properly, it will cause further complications. When dentures rub and slip around in your mouth, sores develop, and these sores are painful and can sometimes cause infection. You should always seek out professional help when this needs to be done. At-home kits will not provide perfect results even if you follow the directions accurately.

The good thing is that almost all dentures can be repaired. This is always better than needing to buy a brand-new complete set of dentures. Every dental office is different, and your dentures could take a few days or a few weeks. This may all depend on where your dentist fixes them. They could do the repairs in-house or send them to an outside lab.

Consult your dentist

If you wear dentures and feel they need to be repaired, be sure to contact your dentist immediately. You don’t want oral health issues to develop because your dentures aren’t feeling comfortable in your mouth anymore.

Your dentist is there to answer any questions you have, and they are your best source when you have questions about the quality of your dentures.
